SEO vs AEO: What Actually Changes When AI Answers the Query
Ranking #1 doesn't matter if the AI answers before anyone scrolls. Here's the concrete difference between optimizing for results pages and optimizing for the answer itself.

Same goal, different battlefield
SEO and AEO both want the same thing: your stuff in front of the person who's looking. The difference is where the decision happens.
- SEO competes for a position on a results page. The user still chooses a link.
- AEO competes for a sentence inside an AI-generated answer — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews. Often there's no click at all; there's a citation, or there's nothing.
An AI answer can satisfy a query before a traditional result receives a click. The impact varies by market and query, so measure your own impressions, citations and referrals instead of importing an unsourced industry percentage.
What stays the same
Good news first — AEO is not a rewrite of everything you know:
- Crawlability still rules. If the bot can't fetch and parse the page, you don't exist. Robots rules, status codes, and server-rendered HTML matter for both.
- Authority still compounds. Backlinks, mentions, and being the source other sources cite all feed an engine's trust in you.
- Speed and structure help. Clean semantic HTML and fast responses make extraction easier.
What actually changes
1. The unit of optimization shrinks
SEO optimizes a page for a keyword. AEO optimizes a passage for a question. Answer engines lift 1–3 sentence chunks. So:

A JWT lasts exactly as long as its `exp` claim. Access tokens
typically live 5–15 minutes; refresh tokens live days to weeks.
That first sentence is liftable on its own. A 400-word meander before you answer the question is not.
2. Keyword matching gives way to semantic matching
Engines embed the query and your content into vectors and match on meaning. Stuffing "best CRM for startups 2026" six times does nothing. Covering the concept thoroughly — pricing, alternatives, use cases — does.
3. Structured data stays descriptive, not magical
Relevant JSON-LD can describe the entities and content already visible on a page. Google says its AI search features require no special schema, and valid markup does not guarantee a rich result or citation. Use a supported type, keep it consistent with visible text and avoid marking up claims the reader cannot verify.

4. Trust signals get parsed, not just ranked
Visible authorship, update dates and primary citations help readers—and machines—evaluate who made a claim and when it was verified. Treat these as evidence and editorial accountability, not a secret ranking-factor checklist.
5. You need to win per engine
Controls differ by product. OpenAI names OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and GPTBot for potential training. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use ordinary Search eligibility; Google-Extended does not control Google Search inclusion. Audit the official documentation for each desired outcome rather than using one blanket bot list.

403'd by your WAF. - Front-load answers. Put a direct answer in the first sentence under each heading.
- Add accurate structured data where a supported type matches visible content.
- Keep your byline and dates visible — real author, real
datePublished. - Measure citations, not just rankings. Ask the engines your target questions and see who they quote.
The honest summary
SEO gets you onto the shelf. AEO gets you quoted. You still need both — but if your content strategy stops at "rank for the keyword," you're optimizing for a click that increasingly never comes.
What Google officially says—and what practitioners infer
For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, the company says the familiar Search fundamentals still apply: a page must be crawlable and indexed, eligible to appear with a snippet, and useful to people. Google explicitly says there are no additional technical requirements, no special schema and no separate AI text file required. Structured data can help systems understand a page, but it must match visible content and does not guarantee an AI citation.
That evidence changes the practical definition of AEO. It is not a secret technical replacement for SEO. It is an editorial and measurement discipline layered on top of sound search foundations: make claims easy to locate, support them with primary evidence, keep entity and product details consistent, and test whether answer products actually choose the page.
Separate controls, content and outcomes
Use three columns in an AEO audit:

Do not collapse those columns into one score. A crawler hit is not a citation. Valid FAQ markup is not proof of ranking. A citation without a referral may still build awareness, while a referral without a stable UTM may be misattributed.
OpenAI also separates controls: its publisher FAQ ties ChatGPT search snippets to OAI-SearchBot, while GPTBot governs potential training. That means a blanket “allow every AI bot” rule is unnecessary. Decide your discovery and training policies independently and document why.

Choose ten questions tied to a real buying or support decision. Record the current cited domains and exact wording. Improve only the pages that already answer those questions: add an answer-first paragraph, update evidence, link related concepts and ensure the server response contains the content. Re-run the same prompts weekly using the same logged methodology, then inspect search impressions and answer-engine referrals. Treat changes as directional because generated answers vary; do not claim causation from a single prompt.
